Studio: Buckaroo Entertainment – Ghost House Pictures – Mandate Pictures
Synopsis:
Drag Me to Hell represents a much anticipated return to the horror genre for director Sam Raimi (of Spiderman and Evil Dead Fame). All the action of Evil Dead with less reliance on violence sounds promising to TormentedFilms.com as well as apparently everyone else.
Alison Lohman plays Christine, a loan officer in Los Angeles. On her way up in the office, she’s obviously interested in impressing her boss. Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) comes in looking for an extension on her loan, giving her the choice between impressing her boss and helping out Mrs Ganush. She chooses her boss, forcing the old woman to lose her house, and securing her fate in this film.
Mrs. Ganush exacts her revenge by placing a curse on Christine, which she has three days to beat or she gets dragged down to Hell. The curse turns her life into a series of frightfully terrifying events. Her boyfriend Clay Dalton (played by Justin Long) doesn’t understand her, so she takes her problem to a seer to find out how to save herself from this awful fate. She embarks on a personal journey to break free of the curse, but has doubts about how far she will go to rid herself of the evil.
Simply put, Drag Me to Hell heralds the return of true horror to the silver screen. We haven’t seen Sam Raimi flex his horror chops since Army of Darkness, and this one is all him, which directing and writing credits. He delivers in spades. Amazingly shot, very nicely put together, and very entertaining, this move is more than just a way to pass 90 minutes. It’s chock full of twists, turns, and surprises around every corner.
Lorna Raver is one amazing actress. She goes from sweet little old lady to classic evil witch lady right in front of us. Raver really makes the role come to life in a way we don’t see too often. For those of you out there who are afraid that the whole witch thing is overdone, don’t be. Truth be told, I’m not sure anyone but Raver could be trusted with this role, lest it be a bit worn out.
Speaking of crack performances, let’s talk about Allison Lohman, of White Oleander fame. Totally believable in a role we’ve never seen before, she carries this movie well. It will be hard to find a better scared but determined woman than Lohman’s Christine. We expect much from her, and she delivers.
Everything from the masterfully placed jumps to the perfectly timed sequences makes this one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. It started well, moved well, and had a finish that knocked me for a loop. I haven’t jumped in a long time, and I don’t expect to again anytime soon. Unless, of course, Sam Raimi is the one shouting boo.
